Volunteer Spotlight

jane_coale.jpg

Jane Coale is a full time RV-er who travels around the US bringing dog agility to communities and shelters alike.. “I stop at every animal shelter I find to help with the dogs (my exercise and therapy).” She has been training Dog Agility at the fun, beginner level for more than seven years and finds it be “a wonderful way of building trust, respect, confidence, and evaluating shelter dogs.” Agility gives volunteers and shelter dogs a new challenge. “Dog agility is a fun way to teach trust and respect with lots of treats and praise. I have built numerous, scaled down, easy obstacles that I use at RV park dog shows, then donate to shelters. I put my first “shelter dog show” with volunteers at the Bucks County SPCA in Pennsylvania. The dogs were wonderful and I could see the volunteers’ pride in their great training (mostly teenagers). Fun activities help prevent burnout. Fun dog shows a few times a year, showcase the dogs and volunteers and is good press for the shelter. This shelter has a great adoption rate and a wonderful volunteer training program. My dream is to have this kind of community involvement at all shelters.” We welcomed Jane back for a third year of Just For Fun Agility with volunteer and community members.

How to Help
Why become a volunteer?

Bucks County SPCA volunteers realize that a little bit of time goes a long way.   Volunteering your time doesn't always mean a trip to the shelter. The Bucks County SPCA relies on volunteers to help with fundraising efforts, community outreach, education, gardening, as well as animal care through socialization and training. We also have ways for you to help from home.  Besides, volunteering is a great way to meet other people who have the same interests as you! So check it out today and spend a little bit of your time making a big difference.

Different Ways to Get Involved
Help From Home:

Did you know you can help the SPCA right from the comforts our your home?  Check out the section on Help From Home for a list of ways to volunteer right now.  If you sew, bake, like to write, email or shop, you can help your local animal shelter.

In the Community/Fundraising:

The Bucks County SPCA relies on the generous donations of community members, people like yourselves.  Fundraisers are held throughout the year to help offset some of the cost of helping the animals, and we rely on volunteers to help staff these events. Often, there is no training required to help at these events.  Please check Event Calendar or our home page to see a list of fundraisers or upcoming events.  We would love your help or just attend to show your support!

At the Shelter:

We need you help to welcome visitors as a greeter, educate the public about SPCA services and socialize and train adoptable animals as an animal care volunteer (18yrs +).

Programs for Kids*:

Our new Kids Club Summer program was designed to help more kids get involved with the SPCA and animals.  Forty eight kids will partcipate in mentored volunteering for 2 hours, once a week for 4 weeks, this summer.  Our program is FULL for this summer.  We will ebgin to take applications for the 2011 summer between January 1 - March 1, 2011.

The success of the Kid's Club is dependant on the participating adult mentors.  We need a four adult mentors, every month, for this program.  If you are interested in mentoring this summer, please contact Diane at (215) 794-7425 ext 101 and submit a volunteer application.  For more information about this program, please check out Volunteer Programs.

Some volunteer opportunities require a volunteer application.  For additional information about individual volunteer programs or to download a volunteer application, see Volunteer Programs.  Volunteer application can also be picked up at the shelter or at community events.  Completed applications can be mailed in, dropped off or faxed to (215) 794-2750.

*Bucks County SPCA is no longer able to offer children under 18yrs old, volunteer opportunities without parental supervision for all volunteer hours due to liability concerns.  Volunteers must be at least 18yrs old to volunteer at Shelter events, off site. Children younger than 18 years old must be supervised by their parent(s) for all animal care volunteering and anyone younger than 18yrs must be supervised by a parent for shelter events and programs unless otherwise specified.
